The 15th annual NW Youth Careers Expo on Tuesday, March 19, has some new features this year. Here are three favorites:

New 2019 Features

Shoe-making robot! | KEEN Footwear plans to bring a shoe-making robot this year. Go here to check out the mesmerizing “Uneekbot!”

Bigger tech zone! | Lots of tech companies will be participating in the Careers Expo this year. We’ll have Intel and Microsoft, along with AWS Elemental and more than dozen vibrant tech employers represented in a TechTown PDX exhibit.

An added Career Talk! | Microsoft will host a mini “Flash Coding” Workshop this year. We are offering 14 Career Talks this year on six different topics. Each is about 20-25 minutes long:

This year’s topics include:

  • How to Ace your Job Interview
  • How to Land a Summer Job
  • Uncover Hidden, High-Paying Jobs
  • Build an Outstanding Resume
  • Tech Careers: Q&A with the Pros
  • Flash Coding! with Microsoft

For session times, go here and look for Career Talks under printable handouts, or visit our Mock Interview page. Drop-ins are welcome. Students who attend a Career Talk or do a mock interview will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Favorite Returning Features

“Look for the Lightbulb”: A number of exhibitors offer summer jobs, volunteer opportunities, jobs for 18-year-olds, or other options for high school students. Look for exhibitors with green lightbulb signs at their booths.

Simple Expo map: Online you’ll find the simple Expo Student Map. It shows students how the Expo floor is divided into zones.  Use this as a planning tool, combined with our printable list of exhibitors, to help students research employers prior to the Expo and decide where to go.

Mock interviews: We have a bumper crop of professionals doing mock interviews right outside the Expo Hall. Schools are asked to sign up in advance, but drop-ins are allowed. Students can bring their resume and sharpen their interviewing skills with a caring professional.

Go here for all educator resources, including bus information. Our complimentary Expo Resource Guide, a printed guide with a map and directory, will be available for students and exhibitors when they arrive.
