Portland Parks & Recreation plans to hire more than 200 high school students for 2017 summer youth program jobs and wants PWA’s help in getting the word out.
An estimated 150-175 teens will be hired as prospective camp counselors, junior counselors and playground attendants. Students also are sought to work on environmental education projects and in programs targeting immigrant and refugee communities.
We expect to get final copies of job descriptions and updated wages soon, ranging from about $11 to $14 an hour for entry-level recreation counselors and attendants — and slightly more for specialized instructors in music, gymnastics and skateboarding.
Priority will be given to those who apply by March 18 (the Saturday following NW Youth Careers Expo) and applicants must attend one of three group interviews to be scheduled in March and April. Students can work anywhere from 20 to 40 hours a week.
